Masbate Rebels Suffer Double Whammy in Sorsogon Encounter

FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City – Rebels who fled the relentless pursuit operations of the Army in the province of Masbate suffered another humiliating defeat in the hands of government forces in Sorsogon, a military official said.
Lt. Col Teody Toribio, Commanding Officer of the 31st IB stationed in Juban town in Sorsogon said that his unit dealt a decisive blow against the Masbate-based rebels during an encounter at about 2:00pm yesterday, Nov 29.

The said encounter resulted to the recovery of 8 high-powered rifles.
He said that he sent a nine-man squad of soldiers together with some PNP officers to check on a report that an abandoned white maritime vessel ran aground the coastal waters of Brgy Poblacion Norte in Barcelona, Sorsogon early in the morning yesterday.
“A tipster saw armed men disembark the vessel early in the morning of Nov 29. This information was also validated by another villager who claimed to have seen the rebels boarding a motorcycle towards Juban town,” said Toribio.
Two of the rifles, a 12-gauge shotgun and an M1 Carbine rifle were discovered inside the abandoned fishing vessel which ran aground in the sandbar.
The group of soldiers who scoured the vicinity, were fired upon by the rebels who were hiding behind the thick mangrove trees. A 15-minute firefight ensued after which the rebels escaped with their casualties.
“They mingled with the civilian fishermen who happened to be in the area prompting my soldiers to hold their fire to prevent collateral damage,” added Toribio.
The soldiers confiscated 6 more high-powered firearms including five (5) m16 rifles and one (1) cal.30 M1 Garand rifle which were left behind by the fleeing rebels. The soldiers also recovered various types of  ammunition, subversive documents and personal belongings.
Army Corporal Jeffrey N Balajadia, the squad leader, said that during the inspection, they found  the markings 'MAS 15.0002BA' indicating that the vessel was registered in Masbate.
Col Felix Castro, 903rd Brigade Commander, who has operational jurisdiction in the provinces of Sorsogon and Masbate, directed 31st IB to launch pursuit operations against the NPA rebels.

He also confirmed that the armed men belong to a group of communist rebels operating in Masbate.
“The recovered subversive documents indicated that the rebels who figured in this firefight came all the way from Masbate province. They suffered heavily in the recent clashes with the 9th Infantry Battalion in that area, forcing them to flee towards mainland Bicol which is accessible by boat,” said Castro.
Castro also emphasized that the encounter is a perfect example of Oplan Bayanihan at work. He lauded the PNP and the civilians who provided the timely information regarding the rebels’ presence.
“Our healthy relationships with the various stakeholders in the province combined with our “Bayanihan” efforts in Sorsogon paid off leading to this accomplishment.” concluded Castro.

Red Panther

After we graduated from the Philippine Military Academy in 1994, we were immediately sent to the Scout Ranger School to undergo our Ranger tactics orientation training.

As fresh graduates from a 4-year military course, most of us hated being subjected to rigorous training instructions handled by non-commissioned officers (NCOs). However, since the training was a requirement before our actual deployment to the frontlines, we dutifully followed the regulations.

The birth of the Red Panther

Our daily physical training  (PT) uniform in the Ranger School was the 'black panther' outfit. This uniform consisted of a black short and shirt.

Every 4:00 am, we were forcibly awakened by our training NCOs to jog around the camp.

One morning, we were surprised to see a classmate in a distinctive shirt. He was wearing a red shirt!

He became an instant celebrity when he unintentionally made himself as the "rose among the thorns".

Everyone was laughing in the formation area including our stern-looking NCO.

We later found out that he was 'sabotaged' by his own tent buddy.

Since then, he was popularly known as the Red Panther.

He is still addressed the same name by some of our mistahs (PMA classmates) until today.

Wrong Carpark

I was sent to Phoenix, Arizona with three other military officers to conduct inspection of a night-fighting equipment sometime in 2007.

One day, we decided to buy something that we can bring home.

After parking our car inside the mall's carpark, we separated ways to buy our favorite items.

I opted to find some gun accessories while the others roamed around to find some interesting stuffs.

After about an hour, my phone rang.

"Our car is stolen!", my buddy said in a trembling voice.

"Whaaaaaaaat? Call the police at once!", I said. I was also worried because we just borrowed the car from a Filipino friend.

In a record time of about 5 minutes, the police cars came with their lights blinking.

After a short conversation, the cops were scratching their heads while leaving the place.

One of the burly cops could not hold his frustration and told my buddy, "Hey man, next time,  be sure to find your car in the correct carpark!"

FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City---The Philippine Army Dragon Boat Team dominated the just-concluded 1st Zambales Dragon Boat Festival held in Uacon Lake, Candelaria town, Zambales.

Yesterday, Nov 26, the Army team bagged its first gold in 400m Men's event with a fastest time of 1minute and 35.65secs.

Today, the team easily pocketed another gold in the 250m Men's event, clocking 1:03.88 (min, secs).

Several dragon boat club teams participated in the race organized by Zambales Governor Hermogenes Ebdane Jr.

Among the competitors were veterans in local and international races such as the  Triton team, Onslaught and La Salle.

Powered by the 7 members of the world-class athletes popularly known as the Pinoy Dragon Warriors, the team duplicated their accomplishment in the Camsur International Dragon Boat Festival held in CWC complex in September.

Army Chief Major General Emmanuel Bautista has extended his congratulations to the members of the team.

The Army paddlers are also expected to participate in the upcoming dragon boat racing to be held in Manila Bay on December 4, 2011.

A Militiaman's Pen Shop

Deployed as the defenders of their own communities, the Army’s CAFGU Active Auxiliary (paramilitary forces) personnel play an important role in sustaining the peace in former enemy-infested areas.
One day, Boknoy, a militiaman from a far-flung detachment in Mindanao was accompanied by his officer to buy some provisions in Davao City.
He was ordered by his boss to buy ball point pens for their office. They separated ways in the maze of stores inside Gaisano City.
He entered one of the doors after seeing the large signage: PENSHOPPE

He promptly talked to a pretty lady who stood watch near the entrance.
“Can I buy 10 ball pens?”
“Sir, we don’t sell pens here!”, came the reply.
Scratching his head in frustration, he headed towards the exit door but paused to air his sentiment displaying the killer face he learned in training:
Damuho yang tindahan nyong Penshoppe, walang tindang ball pen!” (Damn that Penshoppe store, it has no pens for sale!)

Modern Heroes Cited by the Army

FOR VALOR. Army Chief Emmanuel Bautista awards the Command Plaque to Sgt Ramon Sabellina Jr who was adjudged as the Best Enlisted Personnel of the year, during the 61st Founding Anniversary of the elite First Scout Ranger Regiment yesterday, Nov 25. Sabellina was also recommended to receive the Medal For Valor due to his exceptional display of courage and outstanding leadership in a fierce encounter with more or less 30 heavily-armed rebels in Cateel town, Davao Oriental in August 2011 (Photo by Major Harold M Cabunoc)

FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City----The brave Scout Rangers, the new modern heroes, were cited by the Army during the commemoration of the 61st Founding Anniversary of the First Scout Ranger Regiment yesterday, Nov 25.
Army Chief Major General Emmanuel Bautista personally granted the various awards given to the deserving troops and units during the commemoration ceremonies held at Camp Tecson in San Miguel town, Bulacan at around 10:00am.
Among the awardees was Staff Sergeant Ramon Sabellina Jr of the 4th Scout Ranger Company. He was adjudged as the Best Enlisted Personel of the year.
Sabellina was recommended for the award of the Medal for Valor for displaying his exemplary acts of courage and indomitable spirit in a fierce encounter with 30 fully armed rebels in Cateel town in Davao Oriental on August 12, 2011.
The encounter resulted to the numerous casualties on the enemy side and the recovery of 15 high-powered firearms.
In this classic encounter, Sabellina was also praised for respecting the rights of the captured bandits. Video grab from a local TV network in Davao showed that the Scout Rangers treated the three wounded rebels including a female fighters Lyka Navarro and Michelle Duque.
Seeing the humane treatment of the captured rebels, 15 more rebels surrendered to the Army the following day. It led to the dismantling of the local CPP-NPA-NDF armed group in that province.
The 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion where Sabellina belongs, received the Best Scout Ranger Battalion award.
Secretary Voltaire Gazmin who also came to grace the occasion was all smiles when the battalion Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Kiram Azgar Grajo received the command plaque and streamer as Scout Ranger Commander Colonel Abraham Bagasin looked on. Gazmin used to command this unit during his younger days.
In his speech, Bautista thanked the Scout Rangers for their heroism. He also reminded the ‘musangs’ (moniker of the Scout Rangers) about their roles in the new AFP campaign Bayanihan which he crafted in 2010.
“While we sustain our efforts in winning the peace, we will continue to hunt down those who insist to follow the wrong path by disturbing the lives of our peace-loving citizens in their communities. This is where your services as protectors are needed,” said Bautista.
Scout Rangers, heroes in Al-Barka

The survivors of the latest Al-Barka incident also praised the conspicuous courage and self-sacrifice made by a Scout Ranger and sniper, Corporal Roberto Ricafranca.
Seeing that they were surrounded by an advancing enemy force numbering more than a hundred, Ricafranca directed his companions to retreat towards safer areas with the other wounded including his cousin, Pfc Alex Ricafranca.
Interviewed while recuperating in the AFP Medical Center, he was  teary-eyed while recalling the heroism of his cousin.

"We were overwhelmed by the enemy's counterattack from all directions. Roberto (Corporal Ricafranca), a topgun in his Scout Sniper class, opted to remain and provided covering fires as we gradually inch our way towards the rear," said Alex.
He also mentioned the bravery of another Scout Ranger, Pfc Jordan Magno, who continuously returned to the most forward positions to collect the casualties.
“Jordan was not wounded the last time I saw him. He kept on returning to the encounter site amidst the volley of fires to save the remaining comrades. He lived up to the Ranger motto: ‘Walang iwanan(leave no one behind),” he said, tears welling in his eyes.

Scout Rangers: The legend continues

By Maj. Harold Cabunoc (The Philippine Star) Updated November 26, 2011 12:00 AM

CAMP TECSON, San Miguel, Bulacan--- Since its activation over six decades ago, the Army’s First Scout Ranger Regiment (FSRR) has continuously produced a long list of heroes.

Trained and organized by the late General Rafael Ileto, the Rangers are the first elite military force in the country.
In 1955, Ileto rose to become the first commander of the striking force, which specializes in anti-guerilla warfare.

Since the Huk campaigns in the 1950s, the “Musangs” (local term for the Scout Rangers) had left an indelible mark in the Army’s operations.

Technical Sergeant Francisco Camacho and Corporal Weenee Martillana were among those who emerged as legendary warriors during that time.

They were both awarded the Medal for Valor after a successful combat mission behind enemy lines, which killed a notorious Huk leader in December 1955.

In the 1970’s, the Scout Rangers were deployed to participate in the government’s campaigns against the secessionist groups in Sulu where they found themselves in the thick of the fight.

During the Battle of Sibalu Hill on November 26, 1972, the Scout Rangers proved their tenacity in combat as they seized the heavily-fortified enemy camp together with a contingent of the Philippine Marines.

In Central Mindanao, another group of Scout Rangers established themselves as a force to reckon with during a firefight with numerically superior enemy forces in 1974.

Led by 2nd Lieutenant Evelio Pugna, a 7-man team of Scout Rangers engaged a hundred strong rebels in the marshes of Libungan town, Cotabato. Through their exemplary skills in small-unit tactics, the ‘black panthers’ killed more than 40 rebels in a heavy fighting which raged for hours.

                                                                 Legend

The most popular Scout Ranger that has existed is the legendary General Julius Javier, a native of Negros Occidental. His daring exploits and unsurpassed combat accomplishments earned for him the “Living Legend” monicker.

He had survived at least three ambuscades unscathed. People around him believed that he had an amulet that protected him from harm.

In December 1972, Javier and two others repulsed an overwhelming enemy force who ambushed the vehicle they were riding as they reinforced a unit of the Marines who suffered numerous casualties in a firefight.

He was the only one who was untouched by the whizzing bullets around them.

His two other buddies were wounded but were able to provide covering fire as he retrieved the others who were trapped in the middle of the engagement area.

Amidst the hail of bullets, Javier carried 6 of his severely wounded comrades one after the other out of the kill zone. He also retrieved all the firearms despite the continuous hail of enemy fire.

“We leave no one behind. It is a sacred SOP (standing operating procedure) among the Scout Rangers,” said Javier, whose reputation as an invincible warrior was cemented by that heroic feat.

                                                             Respected warriors

Javier was widely known not only for his notable battle successes but also his ability to win the fight without using violence.

He led a 7-man team of Rangers who infiltrated the communist-infested areas in Real town, Quezon in 1974. Approaching the bandits unnoticed, Javier captured 8 rebels with their firearms without firing a single shot.

We let them live out of respect for human life. Due to that incident, we left a lasting imprint in the minds of the enemies that the Rangers can reach them wherever they were,’ said Javier, who once served as a commanding general of the expanded First Scout Ranger Regiment.

Operating in Basilan as a Battalion Commander in 1981, Javier received the most number of high-powered firearms when he convinced an MNLF commander to surrender with several of his followers.

Since then, the Scout Rangers earned the respect from the different rebel groups. The enemies knew that the Rangers do not hesitate to pull the trigger when necessary.

                                                             Modern heroes

Through the years, the Scout Rangers continue to live up to the expectations of the AFP and the country.

A number of Scout Rangers received the Medal for Valor Award, the highest award given to military personnel for conspicuous acts of courage and gallantry in combat.

Corporal  Romualdo C Rubi is among the distinguished living heroes.  Singlehandedly, he fought at least 100 heavily-armed communists terrorists in who attacked a military detachment in Claver, Surigao del Norte on March 18, 1991.

Undaunted by the overwhelming enemy force, he engaged the communist rebels in a firefight, killing several of them including the notorious bandit named Commander Lima.

Four years later, then Captain Cirilito E Sobejana of the 1st Scout Ranger Company was awarded the Medal for Valor after displaying his exemplary leadership and courage under intense enemy fire during an encounter with the Abu Sayyaf rebels in Basilan sometime in 1995.

Though wounded severely in his arm, Sobejana continued to inspire his men to outmaneuver the enemy thereby inflicting heavy casualties including 30 dead rebels.

In 1996,  Captain Robert Edward M Lucero, the  Commanding Officer of the 6th Scout Ranger Company received the same award while fighting the MILF rebels in Carmen town in Cotabato.

Known as ‘Bakal’ among his subordinates, Lucero was a fearless warrior who dared to confront numerically superior enemy forces in many occasions.

While defending the government’s infrastructure project in the area, Lucero paid the ultimate sacrifice but showed the finest traditions of Filipino soldiery.

Several other Scout Rangers earned the highest military award in the year 2000 onwards. During the attack on Camp Abubakar and the combat-rescue missions in Basilan, more “Black Panthers” gained prominence when they joined the elite list of living heroes.

While there remain hard-headed lawless elements who victimize hapless civilians, the Scout Rangers are there to protect them. As the cutting edge of the AFP, they are regularly sent to every trouble-spots around the archipelago.

                                                 Rangers Lead The Way

Aside from Javier, several Scout Ranger officers became prominent leaders in the AFP.

General Efren Abu, one of the heroes in southern Mindanao, became the Army Chief and later, AFP Chief of Staff.

Lieutenant General Jesse Dellosa, a veteran of Sulu and Basilan, currently heads the Northern Luzon Command.

Lieutenant General Roland Detabali, who led the 1st Scout Ranger Company in several decisive battles against communist rebels in Northern Luzon, is the incumbent Commander of the Southern Luzon Command.

Major General Noel Coballes, a distinguished combat officer since his younger years, is the Commander of the Army’s 1st Infantry Division in Zamboanga del Sur.

The newly-installed Commanding General of the Philippine Army, Major General Emmanuel Bautista, is also known as the hero of Nava.

As a young captain, he led a 14-man Scout Rangers belonging to the 7th Scout Ranger Company which battled a hundred of communist rebels in Nava village, Hinulangan town in Leyte.

Despite being outnumbered, Bautista effectively dictated the situation due to his outstanding combat leadership. The enemies suffered several casualties including 50 rebels killed, forcing them to withdrew in disarray.

The rebels were flushed out of the communities freeing the people from the heavy burdens of paying extortion money to the oppressive bandits.

On November 25, 2011, the First Scout Ranger Regiment embarks into another major milestone as it celebrates its 61st Founding Anniversary in its new home in Camp Tecson in San Miguel, Bulacan.

Several of the living heroes and warrior leaders, including the new Army Chief, are expected at the event.

Lost Like a Ranger

Rangers are known for their excellent map reading and land navigation skills. May it be in the lush forests or mountainous terrain, they will never get lost.

There is a joke among the Rangers that goes this way: "No one has the right to say that he can't find his way back home when pigs and dogs can return to its owners when left behind in distant places".

Unfortunately, a fellow Scout Ranger found himself in a precarious situation. He was lost in the urban jungles of North America.

After the 'All out War' in 2000, he was sent for a schooling in the continental United States. His destination was the US Infantry School located in Columbus, Georgia.

When he arrived at the tiny airport of Columbus, he promptly rang our foster mom, a German-American woman who had been 'adopting' Filipino soldiers in her home.

"Hey Maam, I have just landed. Are you going to fetch me here at the airport?", he said.

"Son, I am right outside waiting for you. You were not inside when I came in", she said.

He was anxious. He went to look for her outside the arrival area. She wasn't there!

"Maam, I couldn't find you. I am already outside. I am wearing a Scout Ranger black panther shirt".

"Son, please look at the signages. Please read the exact location of that airport", she said, the tone of her voice was already worried.

"Ohhhhhhhhhh, sh_____ttttttttt!! Maam, I am in Columbus, Ohio!"

(Speaking in Visayan dialect, he cursed all the people who arranged his travel to the US of A)

A Ranger's Gorgeous Girlfriend

In early 2000, one of our fellow Scout Ranger was sent on a military schooling in the United States.

When he returned a few months later, he was bragging about his exploits. He had some pictures as solid proofs of his adventures.

My buddy, Gani, was so intrigued about a photo showing our Ranger buddy with a voluptuous lady in white who looked like Marilyn Monroe.

"Well, gentlemen, she became my girlfriend when I was in California," our Ranger buddy bragged.

We couldn't question his claim. He had a 'prima facie' evidence. He was embracing the lady as if they were long-lost lovers.

Hmmmmmm. Our buddy is very lucky.

The gorgeous girlfriend of our Ranger buddy is right here!!!

Meeting the Girlfriend ng Bayan

A few years later, I and Gani were also sent to the US for our military schooling. I studied how to 'snipe' with mortars while he mastered the art of long-range reconnaissance.

When we graduated, Gani happened to drop by Los Angeles to see some close relatives.

He got the chance to visit the Universal Studios.

He was roaming around the place to enjoy the sights and sounds of Hollywood when he saw a familiar face.

He saw our Ranger buddy's "girlfriend"! He went to investigate. The lady looked very friendly and had a ready smile to everyone.

"Hi, do you want a photo with me? I only charge 5 dollars for a copy of our photo," said the lady.

Finally, he met the paid "Girlfriend" of our buddy!

Everything was history.

When he came back, he 'confronted' our Ranger buddy. I and three others witnessed the funny meeting in 2004.

"Buddy, I met your 'girlfriend' in Hollywood and she was still wearing the same outfit," Gani grinned as he unearthed another startling discovery.

"Akala mo di ako makarating ng United States of America ha!" (You thought I wouldn't have the chance to be in the United States of America!"

Boisterous laughter filled the air.

Till Bullets Do Us Part: A Different Story of Love and War

Noel Dela Cerna and his family

When the hail of bullets rained on them that fateful day on January 29, 2010, militiaman Noel Dela Cerna, 26, thought it was the end of him.

He found himself helpless in the midst of a literal valley of death, pinned down by murderous enemy fire.

An NPA ambush brought down Sicad and shattered Escano’s left arm.

He and his fellow militiaman, Enrique Sicad, were unarmed because of the election period’s firearms ban when they responded to reports of rebels extorting money in a village.

His detachment commander, Staff Sergeant Montano Escano, was a bit luckier since he risked bringing his pistol despite the gun ban.

Leave no man behind

Hearing the loud voice of Escano to go for cover amidst the murderous explosions of rifle grenades and staccato of gunfire, Dela Cerna rushed to a tree to shield himself from enemy fire.

Bullets ripped the shrubs beside him every time he bobs his head to observe the attackers. He saw Sicad on the ground groaning in agony.

About three meters from him, Sergeant Escano, courageously fought the rebels using his Cal .45 pistol. He can see the blood dripping in rivulets from his wounded left arm.

“Drag Enrique towards the ditch, I will cover you,” he heard Escano’s distinctive voice. He promptly crawled towards Sicad who was already gasping his last breath.

He was pulling his friend towards their position when he felt a ‘slap’ on his butt. “Sarge, I think I am hit by that stupid rebel in the high ground,” he shouted at Escano.

The reign of automatic fire continued. Thinking that they were already dead, the rebels crossed the road towards their hiding place. Escano signaled him to calm down and to feign death.

Fighting like cornered wolves

They kept silent and waited as three rebels came nearer them, guns pointed at their general direction. Both of them remained motionless, Escano tightly held his pistol by his uninjured right hand.

“Let’s finish them off,” he heard one of the rebels saying. From his position, he could see that two rebels were approaching Escano.

He saw the jubilant, devilish smiles from the rebels who thought they were all dead.

He sent his quick prayers to the heavens. “God please protect me.” He readied himself since his only hope was to wrestle a weapon from one of the rebels.

All of a sudden, Escano shot the approaching rebels at point blank range.

One died instantly while the two other rebels, though wounded, were able to run howling back towards the positions of their comrades.

Covering fire from the rebels immediately plowed the ground in front of the soldiers.

“Grab their weapons,” he heard Escano’s earsplitting order.

He instantly jumped towards the dead rebel to snatch his belongings while bullets whizzed all around him.

Taking the enemy’s M16 Armalite Rifle and hand grenades, he swiftly ran back towards their defensive position.

Removing the safety pins, he threw the grenades back to the rebels, shredding their general locations. He then shot the rebels with the M16 Rifle that he confiscated from them.

In a stroke of luck, their fierce counter attack struck the rebels with mortal fear and they began running for their lives, shouting, “Grenades, withdraw, withdraw!”

An expert shooter, Escano swapped his pistol with the M16 Rifle and shot the retreating rebels, who scampered in disarray.

When reinforcements from their camp arrived moments later, Dela Cerna gradually felt the gnawing pain on his butt------ he felt that a bullet was stuck on his bun!

Sworn Duty

Arriving at a government hospital in Legaspi City later in the evening, he was greeted by a bubbly lady doctor who looked unhappy with their predicament. Her nameplate said she was Dr. Marissa Reyes M.D.

Bakit kasi kayo nagpapatama at bakit dyan pa sa pwet,” she commented. “Why did you fight with those rebels? During encounters, you should just run and hide,” she added with a wide grin...

As if pouring salt to his wound, the lady doctor continued with her flurry of unwanted comments.

“What will you do with your medals for heroism if you end up dead?” she said.

By that time, his ego was hurt. He felt the need to defend the dignity of the soldiers especially the likes of Sicad who had offered the ultimate sacrifice.

“Ma’am, we have performed our sworn duty to protect our country from these terrorist rebels, so please do your own duty which is to treat patients like me,” was his straightforward response. Dr. Reyes was caught off-guard by his candid reply.

“Well, my father is a police Colonel,” she said, as if ‘threatening’ him.

“Dr. Reyes, I am a proud CAFGU member and my father is a farmer who plows the fields,” he replied.

Dr. Reyes became tight-lipped but she can hear muffled laughter from among the nurses who were entertained by the playful argument.

They were aware that the doctor was ‘outgunned’ by the smart militiaman.

That ‘debate’ was the start of their succeeding personal interactions.

Brave soldier

That same night, the doctor returned with two nurses in tow. “We will take blood samples from you,” the nurse told him. Using his peripheral vision, he saw that Dr. Reyes was observing him while sitting on a bed nearby.

The nurses jotted down his name and other personal details. He entertained them with some funny remarks while blood samples were taken from his arm.

Though in pain, he rose to his feet and tried walking around. He knew Dr. Reyes was keeping an eye on him, smiling with an amazed look on her face.

Another physician, Dr Nick Manzano was surprised upon seeing him walk. “You are really a brave soldier. You do not mind your wound. Probably, you will be out of this hospital by tomorrow morning” he said. The nurses nodded in agreement.

Passing near Dr. Reyes, he saw a different expression on her face. “Kaw ha, nag-papa-cute ka sa mga nurses,” she said, with a tone of jealousy.

He suspected that the lady doctor was attracted to him.

Soldiers are ‘womanizers’

The next morning, the Dr. Reyes together with nurses came to visit the ward, which accommodated ten patients at that time.

She normally requires the patients to sit on their bed during these routine visits.

Seeing that he was lying on his stomach, she asked, “Why don’t you sit like the others? That is our policy here in this hospital during the doctor’s rounds.”

“Please understand my situation Dr. Reyes, I have a bullet wound in my butt,” he pleaded with a smile. He felt that she was ‘playing’ practical jokes on him.

Later in the day, Dr. Reyes came back to see him. He was surprised that she cleaned his butt wound herself. As the lovely doctor worked on his injury, they shared some funny stories.

When he asked for her cell phone number, she looked excited but she hesitated. “Soldiers are known womanizers. I don’t believe that you’re still single, show me your ID,” she joked.

Using his charm and power of persuasion, he finally convinced her to give in. Before she left the ward, she told him, “Honestly, I really think I have met you in the past.”

Still nursing from his previous heartache, he found some relief in her presence. It was only about two years back that he lost his wife, a school teacher, in a freak vehicular accident.

He can see the sparkle in the eyes of his attending physician. When she was out of sight, he can sense an unexplainable poignant feeling in his heart.

However, he was unsure about his feelings. He kept it to himself until the time that he was about to be transferred to the AFP Medical Center in Quezon City.

He could not find her when a military ambulance unexpectedly came to pick him up. He texted her and she rushed to his location. The last thing he saw was her lonely face when the ambulance departed from the hospital premises.

Doctor Love

After the military doctors removed the bullet from his butt, he was told to stay in V.Luna hospital (AFPMC) to recuperate for the next two months.

Life would have been boring if not for the daily greetings in his cell phone from Dr. Reyes about 500 kilometers away in Legaspi City.

They shared some jokes, anecdotes, and personal experiences on a daily basis. Somehow, she had started to ‘cure’ his bleeding heart.

Some days, they would also quarrel especially if he fails to answer the phone immediately.

Escano, who shared a bedroom with him at the AFPMC’s heroes ward, became his trusted adviser.

“Don’t play games with her, she comes from a respectable family,” came the advice of his Detachment Commander who was also recovering from his injured upper arm.

In their daily communication, he also learned that Dr. Reyes has a sister, Alma, who is an officer of the Philippine Navy.

She has a police colonel for a father and a naval officer for a sister. For obvious reasons, he could not possibly mess with the lady.

He heeded the advice of his Commander. He sees him as his guardian angel especially after saving his life in that encounter.

“If you are serious about courting her, propose to her personally when you are back in Albay,” Escano told him, a brotherly advice that he respected.

Braving the odds

Disembarking from the bus that carried him back to Legaspi City, his first destination was the hospital where his love interest was working.

“I came here to personally tell you that I love you with all my heart,” he told Dr. Reyes, whose tears welled as they embraced.

Their love blossomed and they became almost inseparable. When he is not able to come to Legaspi City, Dr. Reyes would travel to his detachment to visit him.

He introduced her to the life of a militiaman. “I love my profession in the same way that I love you,” he explained.

Though he had won her heart, he failed to get the nod of her father. He did not approve of their budding relationship and refused to talk to him.

He was lucky that he got the ‘naval support’ of Alma who asked him to marry Dr. Reyes if he truly loved her.

He felt even more fortunate that “Baby,” as he fondly addresses Dr Reyes, unwaveringly fought for their love.

Lucky bullet

He felt sorry for the deaths of his buddy and the rebel who tried to kill them but the bullet which hit his buttocks that day turned out to be his greatest luck.

He has kept it as a memento of his second chance at life. Somehow, it became his lucky charm.

Despite the disapproval of Marissa’s father, they were married before Judge Alben Rabe in Ligao City on August 24, 2010, about six months after they first met.

He was so happy that Marissa did not falter even though her father had expressed disappointment over the wedding.

Someone asked Marissa what made her love him most.

“He has the cutest butt which I happened to see and care for due to that ‘lucky’ bullet,” she explained. Boisterous laughter filled the room.

“I will love Marissa till bullets do us part,” he said in jest.
