Syrian rebels disarm Filipino peacekeeper in Golan Heights

The UN marked vehicle carrying Philippine peacekeepers was blocked by heavily armed men in the Golan Heights early afternoon on Friday, April 19, 2013.

The peacekeepers said that the four suspects pointed their weapon at the vehicle, forcing them to disembark  at around 1:30 pm.

"They forcibly took one of the M4 carbine rifle that was carried by one of our companions," said one peacekeeper who refused to be identified.

The soldiers were released unharmed after the firearm was taken away from them. They have safely returned to their headquarters after the incident.

The suspects were believed to be members of the anti-government forces that are fighting the Syrian government.

A battalion of Filipino peacekeepers was deployed to keep the peace in the Golan Heights which separate the areas controlled by Israel and Syria.
