NPA rebels in extortion activities die in Albay clash

CAMALIG, Albay - Two NPA bandits lay dead after a clash with Army soldiers in a hinterland village here on Saturday (August 18), a military official said.

Lt Col Audrey Pasia, Commanding Officer of the 2nd Infantry Battalion, said that his troops led by Lt Relloso figured in a clash with at least 10 bandits in Sitio Bulod, Caguiba village here at around 5:30am.

"The NPA rebels sensed the presence of the soldiers and initiated the firefight by firing their guns before starting to flee. My soldiers engaged the rebels in a running gunbattle which lasted about 30 minutes, sending the bandits to various directions in disarray," said Pasia.

While scouring the immediate vicinity of the encounter scene, the soldiers found two lifeless bodies of slain rebels who were left behind by their comrades.

The fatalities were identified as Arboy Moina from neighboring town of Jovellar  and Fernando Mostoles Jr of this town,

A relative came to identify Mostoles when the cadavers were brought to the police station here just before noon.

No one was hurt among the soldiers who were joined by K9 tracking dogs in the pursuit operations directed by 901st Brigade commander Colonel Ricardo 'Bong' Visaya.

Though decimated in numbers, a small band of communist rebels continuously threaten communities with violence if their demands for extortion money are not granted.

The hotline number set up by the 2nd Infantry Battalion is flooded by complaints from villagers about the oppressive extortion activities which the NPA bandits introduce as 'revolutionary taxation'.
