FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City – Army jins emerged as champions in the just concluded taekwondo tournament held at the Armed Forces of the Philippines Wellness Center, Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City Friday, 16 March 2012.
The Team Army bested 33 other participants garnering six golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze out of the eight events of the 2-day AFP-PNP Taekwondo Tournament attended by hundreds of spectators inside the jampacked hall.
The six gold medalists were Sgt. Michael L Torres for the Lightweight division, Sgt. Maximino D Tabangcora for the Heavyweight division, Pfc. Romel L Jordan for the Finweight division, Pfc. Jun Mark S Jereza for the Middleweight division and Pfc. Edgar A Rosquillo for the Bantamweight division. Meanwhile, Pfc. Jhun Mark D Coronel bagged the silver medal for the Welterweight division and Pfc. Ranger D Dayag got the bronze medal for the Featherweight division.
The sporting event was participated in by outstanding athletes from the AFP services including 10 from the Army, 8 from the Air Force, 7 from the Navy. There were eight athletes from the PNP.
The athletes went through a single elimination before battling it out in the final round.
Army Spokesperson Major Harold Cabunoc said that Army chief Lt Gen Emmanuel Bautista promptly sent his congratulatory message to the athletes and the coaching staff, when told about the latest accomplishment by the Army athletes.
