Basilan ambush hurts 35 rubber plantation workers

SUMISIP, Basilan---Thirty five people were hurt in an ambush staged by suspected Abu Sayyaf rebels in a rubber plantation here at around 12:45pm today (Sep 7), a military official said.

Colonel Lope Dagoy, the Spokesperson of the Army's 104th Brigade said that 6 of those wounded were in critical condition. He also said that one victim died instantly due to bullet wounds.

He said that 104th Brigade Commander, Colonel Carlito Galvez Jr directed soldiers belonging to the 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion led by Lt Col William Gonzales and also the 64th Infantry Battalion, to pursue the perpetrators of the bloody ambush.

"Our soldiers have mounted pursuit operations following their tracks while another group transported the wounded victims towards Tumahubong airstrip for first-aid treatment. We have also gathered soldiers to donate blood for the injured plantation workers," said Dagoy.

Dagoy said that Galvez personally supervised the casualty evacuation.

The victims are members of TARBIDCI, a rubber plantation cooperative formed by a community of Muslims and Christians in the upland village of Tumahubong.

They were heading home on board two Saddam trucks for lunch break when they were fired upon by undetermined number of bandits who were hiding in the bushes.

It can be recalled that on July 11, 2012,  6 people were killed while 22 others were wounded in an ambush perpetrated by the same group of lawless elements.

Two Army battalions, the 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion and the 64th Infantry Battalion were redeployed in the area after a bloody fighting which claimed the lives of 10 soldiers also in July this year.
