FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City---A platoon of Scout Rangers scores another victory against the Abu Sayyaf Group rebels in Basilan island early morning today, a military official said.

Colonel Ramon Yogyog, the Commander of the Special Operations Task Force Basilan said that the crack teams of Scout Rangers carried out an early dawn raid on a hinterland village of Lawila in Lantawan town at around 5:45am today, December 2.

"We caught them by surprise and they retreated to different directions after a brief exchange of fires. They left behind 7 high-powered firearms in their temporary hideout located near the coastlines," said Yogyog.

The soldiers confiscated from the rebels an Cal 5.56mm M653 Rifle (baby armalite), 40mm M203 Grenade Launcher, 2 M16 Rifles and 3 M1 Garand Rifles.

No one was hurt among the Scout Rangers who promptly tracked the rebels by following the trails of blood along the route of withdrawal.

Pursuit operations continued the whole day.

The recent clash followed after another group of Scout Rangers encountered a different group of Abu Sayyaf kidnappers in Sumisip town two days ago (Wed).

The soldiers confiscated a hand grenade and a Cal 45 pistol from a dead rebel who was left behind by his fleeing comrades.

The government forces have continued to hunt down a group of lawless elements who have eluded arrest for the past months. The dreaded Abu Sayyaf group is still holding  some kidnap victims.
