Two NPA rebels die in Quirino clash

FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City- Two New People’s Army rebels were killed in an encounter with the Army troops in the province of Quirino early morning today (February 6), a military report said.

702nd Brigade Commander Col Felicito Trinidad said that a platoon of soldiers belonging to  the 48th Infantry Battalion led by 1Lt Frances S Belarmino, was conducting a security patrol in Sitio Sibbagan, Brgy. Landigan, Nagtipunan, Quirino when they were fired upon by more or less 30 NPA rebels, triggering a firefight which commenced at around 9:18am.

Two NPA rebels lay dead after the 20-minute exchange of fires. The others fled with their casualties, leaving traces of blood along the escape routes.

The troops confiscated high-powered firearms and ammunitions including two M16 rifles, one M14 assault rifle, one M203 Grenade Launcher, one M79 grenade launcher, and a laptop computer.

No one was reported hurt among the soldiers who were involved in the firefight.

Local officials have also said that no one among the villagers were injured in the heavy exchange of fires.

Meanwhile, the cadavers of the slain rebels were turned over to  the local officials of Nagtipunan townfor proper identification and for possible turn-over to their respective family members.

Trinidad said that the rebels were trying to disrupt the medical mission carried out by his unit in the area.

"My soldiers led by Lt Col Kurt Decapia were helping a German NGO, 'Operations Blessing' for the past several days. Through this effort, the people in the area received wheelchairs, fishnets and assorted medicines," said Trinidad.
